Horseback Riding Horseback riding has been popular in
Whistler from the very beginning. This was the only means of
transportation in those days. Now we look on it as a pleasant
pastime to share with our families and friends. There are all kinds of sure-footed mounts from ponies to thoroughbreds available. Trails ride go out sometimes 5 times a day for 1 hour or more. This is fun for beginners, kids and nature lovers. Subject to your ability level your wrangler will let you canter your horse along the flat sandy stretches beside rivers, lakes or in meadows. Also available are 1/2 day, full day and overnight trips. All the horses that are used for the trail rides are trained
to take riders when they are about two years old. About three
they begin to experience the Whistler scene since mountain bikes
are especially disturbing to horses. They can smell them but they
can't see them if they are coming up from behind. This can
startle the horse. If they are allowed to turn around and see the
bikers the horse will usually be okay. The personality of the horses comes through on the rides. Sometimes you'll get a cheeky one that wants to stop and smell the flowers, or more precisely eat the clover. The tendency to nibble along the way is strong even though the horses go through 40 pounds of Alfalfa and 15 gallons of water at the stables each day when it's hot. You have to stamp your authority on them early on in your ride or they will push you as far as they can. There are several stables in the Whistler area
